It’s true! You can find a variety of exotic reptile pets ranging from an impressive boa to a baby tortoise for sale. Our online reptile store has everything you need to find the best pet for you. Many people think that owning an exotic pet means having to put in extra work. In reality, it can be just as easy, or even less maintenance, than traditional pets. Dogs and cats are great, but if you want something that comes with unique benefits, consider researching exotic reptile pets.
Reasons to Own Exotic Reptile Pets
If you’re already looking into owning reptile pets, you probably already know the benefits of owning one. But for those who don’t, here are a few reasons to own exotic reptile pets.
Pet allergies are the worst but an exotic species can help! If fur is your kryptonite, then consider scales, feathers, and shells instead. Just because they’re not furry doesn’t mean they can’t be cuddly. Tortoises, for example, are known to be great companions.
They don’t take up much space. If you live in a cramped apartment but feel it’s a little too empty, a reptile pet can be your solution. Exotic species tend to be smaller, so all you’ll need is an enclosure and the necessary basics, like lighting and heat, to keep your reptile happy.
If you’re limited on time, a reptile pet can still be worth considering. Find a species that doesn’t require a lot of maintenance so you can continue living your life without worrying about getting home in time to feed it. Of course, reptiles eat, but their feeding schedules vary widely from cats and dogs.
Since they’re exotic, and not as popular, a novice reptile lover will be in for quite a learning experience. Their unique and specific living conditions, diets, and temperament can be a fun challenge for anyone looking to deviate from the conventional pet experience.
Are You Looking For A Baby Tortoise For Sale?
A baby tortoise for sale is a great example of why reptile pets require thorough research. Although they are indeed adorable and miniature when they’re hatchlings, they do grow substantially. This means that their environment must change accordingly. If you have the space to keep a baby tortoise for sale, you’re in for a treat. Our selection of tortoises for sale range from the beautifully decorated Indian star tortoise to the playful Red-footed tortoise.

When most people think about buying their first pets, reptiles for sale at their local pet store probably isn’t their first choice. But once you understand what makes reptiles the best pets, you’ll start searching for a new scaly friend in no time. We all know that dogs and cats make great pets. But no one ever mentions how great owning a reptile can be. So let’s see what makes them great pets.
Your choices are practically unlimited.
When it comes to reptiles, you have an unbelievably wide range of animals to choose from. It’s not only because of the countless species, but also the different combinations (or morphs) you can find. Morphs are really just a combination of two reptiles from the same species, which makes for beautiful patterns and coloration. They vary in size and temperament which makes your search for the perfect reptile pet even more fun! Regardless of what your preferences are, you can certainly find a reptile for sale that fits your lifestyle.
They can be low maintenance.
Unlike cats and dogs that need walking and training, reptiles only require handling and the usual feeding. Of course, there are some reptiles for sale that require more maintenance and time than others, so make sure you understand the needs of your reptile pet before you purchase it. For the most part, all they need is the right diet, lighting, and heating.
They make great companions.
You might be surprised to know just how much some reptiles enjoy the company of humans. Tortoises, for example, follow their owners around and hang out beside them. The bearded dragon is a naturally social reptile that loves the company of humans, too. Once you get used to handling your new pet, keeping each other company will become second nature.

Even before knowing these tortoise facts, many people are fans of these fantastic reptiles. From the time we ever come across a tortoise, we’re fascinated by their slow movements and massive bodies that double as homes. Our fascination seems to grow as time goes on. It’s no surprise that they’re one of the most popular reptile pets. Learn more about these amazing creatures with these fascinating tortoise facts from around the world.
Interesting Overall Tortoise Facts
Let’s get you started with some overall tortoise facts. “Tortoise” refers specifically to terrestrial turtles and they’re usually herbivores that can’t swim. It may be due to their heavier shells. Also, unlike their water counterparts, tortoises have stubby feet. The shell is the tortoise’s exoskeleton, which is made up of three main parts: the bridge, the top carapace, and the bottom plastron. And even though you can’t see them, tortoises have a spine, a collar bone, and even ribs.
Because they’re cold-blooded, they draw their heat from the environment and are usually more active during the day than at night. This is why good reptile lights and other heating methods are highly recommended if you’re thinking of having one as a pet.
Tortoise facts about lifespan and care
These tortoise facts are important to know if you’re looking for a tortoise for sale. Different species are born in captivity which results in the tortoises living between twenty and eighty years, even longer depending on the species. If you’re looking for longevity in your pet, a tortoise is the perfect pick. For those who aren’t able to commit so much time, another reptile would be a better choice. If you decide to get a tortoise, it’s strongly recommended to research the specific type of tortoise you want. That way, you know exactly what it’s needs will be in regards to lighting, habitat, and diet.
Like with any animal, it’s important to know what you’re getting into before you shop for a tortoise for sale. Keepers commonly go for the South American Red-footed Tortoise. It’s bright colors, friendly character, and medium size make it an easy choice.
Information About Tortoise Breeds
Looking for information about tortoise breeds? Some of the captive bred hatchlings available all year long include Leopard Tortoises, African Spurred Tortoise, and the Russian Tortoise. Be sure to always research the type of breed you’re considering so you know the best way to maintain it and give it a healthy, happy life.
Now that you know a little more about tortoises, it’s easier to decide whether or not a tortoise is the pet for you. At xyzReptiles, we’re here to help you decide which reptile is the right one for you.

There are dozens of different species of captive bred and born tortoises being produced in the US today. Most of them are robust and healthy animals that can live for decades and grow to be impressive animals as adults. Finding the right pet tortoise for sale can sometimes be a challenge and we hope that by discussing some of the pros and cons of a few select species we can help narrow the search down for you. We have divided this article into sections based on the eventual adult sizes of the animals being mentioned.
Smaller pet tortoises like the Greek tortoise and the Russian Tortoise
Some of the smaller pet tortoises available on the market are the old world species like the Russian Tortoise (Testudo horsfieldii) and the Greek Tortoise (Testudo graeca). Both of these animals are considered to be on the smaller side of the size scale reaching adult lengths of 6 to 11 inches and both have females that get almost twice the size of the males. This is to allow for the production and storage of the unfertilized eggs. They are both grassland tortoises that eat a variety of weeds and flowers. Although they are not the most colorful of specimens, both are kept as pets due to their accommodating adult size for terrarium and indoor pens.
Medium size tortoises like the Red Footed Tortoise and the Leopard Tortoise
If you are looking for a pet that can be kept outdoors in garden pens then the Red Footed Tortoise (Chelonoidis carbonaria) or the Leopard Tortoise (Stigmochelys pardalis) are perfect animals for you. Red footed tortoises average adult size can be up to 18 inches while the adult leopard can reach over 24 inches in length. Both are attractive and colorful animals that will need a 10 to 15 foot pen outside with the availability of heated winter boxes or indoor accommodations depending on where you live. The red foot has a more forgiving ability to handle humidity and a more varied diet while the leopard needs to be kept drier and fed a diet that is grass based.
Large tortoises like the Sulcata tortoise and the Burmese Mountain tortoise
Some of the few lucky reptile keepers that have access to larger outdoor pens should look into the opportunity of owning a land tortoise that can exceed 24 inches as an adult and weigh in excess of 80 pounds. Both the Sulcata Tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata) and the Burmese Mountain Tortoise (Manouria emys) are readily available as captive born specimens and are great giant outdoor pets. Since both animals get rather large and have a tendency to dig it is essential that you have a plan in place for their permanent adult enclosures before you make a purchase. These species and many more are available right now in our dedicated tortoises for sale section at xyzReptiles and we are always here to answer any questions you may have about diet, housing or maintenance of your reptile pet.
Out of the thousands of reptiles currently in my care the hands down favorites have got to be my 11-year-old pair of Aldabra Pet Tortoises. These two shy behemoths make me stop and think about where I was back in 2005 when I first got them and they also make me wonder where I’ll be in another 11 years when they will hit sexual maturity.
I have always favored Monitor Lizards and Pythons in my collection but recently with the availability of great quality captive born tortoises I have been thinking more and more about the possibility of becoming a tortoise breeder. I am aware that breeding tortoises is no easy task and the time required to bring a herd to maturity is longer than most people are willing to stick to a project. It is however very rewarding to see the results of such a well-planned and managed breeding project.
Committing to a Pet Tortoise
In the meantime, I am having great pleasure in meeting, talking to and buying tortoises from local breeders and suppliers from around the country. Having a pet tortoise is a long-term commitment as there are certain species that can live up to 80 years and beyond. They do have special dietary and lighting needs if you are keeping them indoors but once you have figured out the basics and committed yourself to the routine of keeping pet tortoises it can be great and rewarding experience.
