Are Tegus a Pet or Pest?

Tegus for Sale

Like a multitude of other flora and fauna South American Black and White Tegus have come to call South Florida their home away from home. This stocky member of the Teiidae family can grow up to four feet in length and is speckled black and white with a banded tail. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has set up a hotline and printed posters to alert the local population to be on the lookout for these animals as they may pose a minor threat to local birds and small mammals.

Originating in Central and South America, Tegus are the New Worlds version of the monitor lizard and occupy some of the very same habitats. They are mostly terrestrial and burrow or use dense brush as protection. They are also one of the more interesting reptile pets and becoming more popular all the time. The captive breeding of the Blue Tegu, which is one of the close relatives of the Black and White Tegu and the subsequent spontaneous production of the Albino Blue Tegu, have made this species a much-desired segment of the exotic reptile trade.
